Dar es salaam, January 17, 2026 — Chinese-built VIP guesthouse at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam has opened its doors, marking a new chapter in Tanzania’s ability to host high-level international visitors. The facility was officially handed over and began operations on January 17, 2026, in a ceremony presided over by Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi, who highlighted its strategic importance for the country’s diplomatic and official engagements.
Constructed by China Railway Jianchang Engineering Company (CRJE) (East Africa) Limited, the new guesthouse reflects the growing cooperation between Tanzania and Chinese enterprises under the Belt and Road Initiative. Built in an astonishing 75 days far ahead of an original 10-month schedule the project stands as a testament to construction efficiency while maintaining high quality standards, according to CRJE’s chairman.

Situated near Terminal 1 of the busy East African gateway, the 4,800-square-meter facility boasts a two-storey main building with some sections reaching three floors. Its design includes a reception hall, VIP lounges, meeting and conference rooms, and various supporting service facilities aimed at meeting the diverse needs of visiting dignitaries. It can accommodate up to five heads of state or other distinguished guests at the same time, a move Tanzanian officials say will significantly enhance the airport’s capacity to host high-level diplomatic and official events.
During the opening ceremony Vice President Nchimbi stressed that the new guesthouse not only enhances Tanzania’s hospitality infrastructure but also underscores the strength and capability of Chinese firms operating in East Africa. The project is viewed as part of a broader push to modernise national infrastructure and deepen bilateral cooperation.
Officials from both sides have described the guesthouse as a key venue for Tanzania’s foreign affairs activities, underscoring the nation’s readiness to support an increasing flow of diplomatic engagements and international visitors.

The inauguration of this facility comes amid broader efforts to upgrade and expand aviation and tourism infrastructure across Tanzania, positioning the country as a more attractive hub for regional diplomacy and global connectivity.
