Mogadishu, Jan 13, 2026 – China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, wrapped up his six-day diplomatic tour across Africa this week by sending a clear and assertive message from the Horn of Africa: Beijing stands firmly with Mogadishu against any separatist challenge to Somalia’s sovereignty. His message came amid heightened regional tensions following moves by Somaliland to deepen external ties efforts that China has publicly rejected as threats to Somalia’s unity and stability.
During a key phone call with Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Dhaay, Wang reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, declaring opposition to any attempt by the breakaway Somaliland region to collude with external actors in pursuit of independence.
Wang also extended Beijing’s full backing for Somalia’s rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council this January, underscoring China’s desire to see the country contribute to international peace and security.

Despite the postponement of his planned visit to Mogadishu a schedule adjustment he and Somali officials described as friendly Wang used the moment to elevate diplomatic engagement remotely, inviting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Beijing later this year for the China-Arab States Summit, and pledging deeper cooperation across economic, security and defense sectors.
Somalia’s foreign minister expressed appreciation for China’s steadfast support, reiterated Mogadishu’s commitment to the one-China principle, and welcomed strengthened strategic cooperation aimed at advancing peace and development across the Horn of Africa.

Wang’s Africa tour marked by engagements in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Lesotho concludes against the backdrop of complex geopolitical currents and underscores Beijing’s intent to solidify alliances in a region that is increasingly central to global strategic interests.
