Maputo, March 24, 2026 — A newly completed road project in Mozambique is improving transport and access to services for residents in Matola, a municipality in Maputo Province. Three roads have been upgraded to asphalt, with new drainage systems, sidewalks, street lighting, and culverts.
Carried out with Chinese support, the project replaces previously unpaved routes that were often disrupted by flooding and poor accessibility. The transformation is already reshaping daily life, turning dusty, uneven roads into reliable transport corridors that improve safety and mobility.

Commutes are faster and more predictable, flooding has been reduced, and pedestrian walkways and lighting have enhanced security, particularly at night. The project also lowered transportation costs for small businesses, improved market access, and created around 600 local jobs during construction.

Residents describe the development as a milestone, improving access to schools, healthcare, and markets while supporting broader urban growth. The project reflects ongoing international cooperation aimed at strengthening connectivity, improving living standards, and supporting long-term economic growth. In Matola, the upgraded roads now serve not just as transport links, but as pathways to opportunity and resilience.
