Kenya Flags Off First Duty-Free Exports to China

Nairobi, April 6 — Kenya has flagged off its first consignment of goods to China under a new zero-tariff arrangement, marking a significant step toward a transformative trade policy set to take effect on May 1, 2026.
The shipment was launched in Nairobi in a ceremony attended by senior officials from both Kenya and China, signaling growing momentum in bilateral trade relations. The goods are expected to arrive in China just as the tariff-free regime comes into force.

According to CGTN Africa, the initiative forms part of an early harvest agreement designed to fast-track trade benefits ahead of a broader framework between China and African countries. The arrangement is expected to ease market access and create new export opportunities for Kenyan producers.

Once fully implemented, the policy will grant duty-free treatment to the majority of Kenyan exports entering the Chinese market. It is also part of a wider initiative that extends similar benefits to dozens of African countries with diplomatic ties to China, further strengthening economic cooperation across the continent.

For Kenya, the agreement presents a strategic opportunity to expand its presence in one of the world’s largest consumer markets. Key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and value-added goods are expected to benefit from improved competitiveness and reduced trade barriers.
As the May 2026 rollout approaches, stakeholders are closely watching how effectively the zero-tariff policy will translate into increased trade volumes and long-term economic gains
