ALGIERS, Algeria | October 28, 2026 — Algeria has inaugurated a direct air route between Algiers and Shanghai, establishing a new connection between North Africa and one of China’s most important commercial centres as governments and businesses seek stronger trading partnerships amid mounting global economic uncertainty.
The inaugural flight operated by Air Algérie arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday morning, October 27, following the route’s launch from Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers a day earlier, according to Algeria’s state news agency, Algérie Presse Service.
The service is scheduled to operate three times a week, providing a direct connection between the Algerian capital and China’s financial and manufacturing hub. Shanghai joins Beijing and Guangzhou as the third Chinese destination served by the Algerian airline.
The new route forms part of a broader expansion of Air Algérie’s international network. The airline has also announced new services to several African cities, including Conakry, Brazzaville, Lagos and Tripoli, reflecting its ambition to strengthen Algeria’s connections with African markets and major international economic centres.
Beyond Aviation: The Economic Stakes
The significance of the Algiers–Shanghai route extends beyond passenger travel. Direct air connections can reduce travel times, simplify business trips and facilitate contact between investors, manufacturers and government officials.
China has become an important economic partner for African countries, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, construction, energy and industrial development. For Algeria, improved access to Shanghai could support commercial engagement with Chinese companies and make it easier for Algerian businesses to explore opportunities in the Chinese market.
However, the economic benefits will not materialise automatically. An air route can facilitate business relationships, but it cannot, by itself, guarantee higher exports, new investment or a narrower trade imbalance. Those outcomes will depend on commercial demand, financing arrangements and the ability of businesses in both countries to turn improved connectivity into concrete transactions.
A Connection Amid Global Uncertainty
The launch comes as businesses navigate geopolitical tensions, changing trade policies and uncertainty over international supply chains. Under these conditions, maintaining reliable connections between markets can become an important component of economic strategy.
For Algeria, the route offers an additional channel for engagement with Asia while complementing its efforts to strengthen ties across Africa. For China, stronger transport links with North African economies can facilitate commercial relationships in a region positioned between European, African and Middle Eastern markets.
Yet the broader implications should be assessed carefully. Air connectivity is an enabling condition for trade, not proof of a major economic shift. The route’s long-term importance will depend on passenger demand, cargo opportunities and whether companies establish lasting commercial partnerships.
For now, the inaugural flight represents a practical step towards closer Algeria–China engagement. Whether it becomes a significant driver of investment and trade will depend on what follows: sustained business activity, stronger commercial exchanges and measurable economic results.
