EAC Political Confederation Consultations Continue in Rwanda

EAC Political Confederation Consultations Continue in Rwanda

By Senior Editor, China Africa News
Kigali, June, 22, 2026 — Experts, policymakers, civil society representatives, and citizens from across Rwanda are currently participating in consultations on the proposed Constitution for the East African Community (EAC) Political Confederation. The exercise, which began in Kigali and is continuing in other parts of Rwanda, forms part of a wider regional effort to gather public views on the future political structure of the eight-member bloc.

The consultations are significant because they move the discussion beyond economic integration and into the realm of political governance. The EAC already operates a Customs Union and a Common Market, but the proposed Confederation would represent a deeper level of integration by establishing common political institutions and governance frameworks.

Supporters argue that a stronger political framework could improve regional security, trade coordination, and diplomatic influence. However, critics caution that political integration remains challenging when member states still differ significantly in governance systems, economic development, and national priorities.

The ongoing consultations in Rwanda illustrate that the process remains a work in progress rather than a predetermined outcome. The final constitutional framework will depend heavily on whether citizens across the region see political integration as beneficial to their daily lives.
