MOGADISHU, Somalia, 11th March 2026 — China has donated $2 million in humanitarian assistance to support communities affected by the ongoing drought in Somalia, where millions are facing worsening food insecurity.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the donation was officially handed over on Sunday by Wang Yu to the Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) in Mogadishu.
During the handover ceremony, Ambassador Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s humanitarian response and strengthening cooperation with the Somali government in addressing the impact of the prolonged drought.
The assistance is expected to help expand emergency relief efforts, including improving access to water, health services, and other critical humanitarian support for drought-affected communities across the country.

Somalia continues to face one of the most severe climate-related crises in the Horn of Africa. According to humanitarian agencies, nearly 6.5 million people are projected to experience acute food insecurity as prolonged drought conditions devastate crops, livestock, and livelihoods.
Officials from SoDMA welcomed the contribution, noting that the funding will support the government’s ongoing efforts to provide urgent relief to vulnerable families, particularly women and children in the hardest-hit regions.
China has been among the international partners providing humanitarian assistance to Somalia in recent years, with the latest contribution aimed at strengthening drought response measures and alleviating the suffering of affected populations.
