Beyond Coffee and Tea: Rwanda Eyes Bigger Opportunities in China

Rwanda Eyes Bigger Opportunities in China

By Cyubahiro Bonaventure
SHANGHAI, 5 November 2026 – Rwanda is participating in the ninth China International Import Expo (CIIE), taking place from 5 to 10 November at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, using the global trade platform to promote its products, attract investment and strengthen economic relations with China.

The participation comes as Rwanda and China celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting a partnership that continues to expand across trade, investment, infrastructure and industrial development.

Shanghai CIIE: A Gateway for Rwandan Products and Global Opportunities

 China International Import Expo

The China International Import Expo is one of China’s flagship platforms for promoting international trade and opening its vast consumer market to global businesses. It brings together international exhibitors, buyers, investors and government representatives, creating opportunities for commercial partnerships and market expansion.

For Rwanda, the Expo represents a strategic gateway to the Chinese market and an opportunity to strengthen its visibility as a reliable supplier of quality products. Since the inaugural edition in 2018, Rwanda has consistently participated, using the platform to connect local enterprises with international buyers.

This year, the Rwandan pavilion showcases specialty coffee, tea, chili, dried fruits, natural honey, macadamia nuts and handicrafts. Visitors can experience the country’s agricultural and cultural heritage through coffee cupping, tea tasting and cultural performances, while business matchmaking connects exhibitors with Chinese buyers, distributors and e-commerce platforms.

China’s zero-tariff treatment for all Rwandan goods, effective since 1 December 2024, further strengthens these opportunities. Subject to applicable rules of origin, customs procedures and product-specific requirements, the arrangement provides favourable conditions for expanding exports and improving competitiveness.

The Expo is particularly important for smallholder farmers, women-led cooperatives and local enterprises seeking international markets. However, maximising these opportunities requires increased production capacity, quality assurance, improved packaging and stronger supply chains.

Strengthening Rwanda-China Trade, Investment and Diplomatic Relations

Economic cooperation between the two countries continues to gain momentum. Bilateral trade reached approximately USD 849 million in 2025, compared with USD 300 million in 2019. Rwanda’s exports to China increased from USD 35 million to USD 227 million over the same period, representing growth of approximately 549 per cent.

Meanwhile, registered investment by Chinese companies in Rwanda rose from USD 460 million in 2024 to USD 548.5 million in 2025, reflecting growing investor interest in manufacturing, infrastructure, construction, energy and real estate.

These developments demonstrate the expanding commercial relationship and opportunities for deeper economic cooperation.

The partnership received further strategic impetus through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership announced in September 2024. Cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) also provides important frameworks for advancing trade, investment, infrastructure and industrialisation.

Rwanda’s Ambassador to China, Amb. Lt Gen (Rtd) Emmanuel Karenzi Karake, described the CIIE as an invaluable platform for Rwandan enterprises, particularly smallholder farmers and women-led cooperatives, to access the Chinese market and establish lasting business partnerships.

He emphasised that every cup of Rwandan coffee and taste of its honey enjoyed by Chinese consumers represents an opportunity to support Rwandan farmers, families and entrepreneurs. He encouraged businesses to seize the opportunities presented by the Expo and further strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.

Beyond Trade: Positioning Rwanda for Future Growth

Rwanda’s participation extends beyond product promotion. The Expo also provides an opportunity to attract investment, promote tourism and showcase the country’s cultural identity and economic potential to international audiences.

Through engagements with Chinese investors, Rwanda is highlighting opportunities in manufacturing, agro-processing, energy and other priority sectors. These partnerships can support technology transfer, industrial development, value addition and employment creation.

For Chinese businesses, Rwanda offers opportunities to diversify sourcing and establish partnerships in a growing East African economy. For Rwanda, stronger engagement with China provides access to capital, technology, expertise and one of the world’s largest consumer markets.

The significance of the CIIE therefore lies in its potential to translate international visibility into tangible economic benefits. Increased exports, productive investment, stronger business networks and employment opportunities are among the outcomes Rwanda seeks to achieve.

As Rwanda and China celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations, the ninth CIIE reinforces their shared commitment to expanding economic cooperation and building mutually beneficial partnerships.

For Rwanda, Shanghai is more than an exhibition destination; it is a gateway to the Chinese market and an important platform for translating diplomatic friendship into trade, investment and shared prosperity.
