OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso, July 19,2026 — At a hospital on the outskirts of Burkina Faso’s capital, a new shipment of medical equipment arrived with a purpose that extended beyond the value of the supplies themselves: to strengthen the country’s ability to diagnose and treat patients and to deepen a health partnership that has spanned five decades.
The 17th batch of the Chinese medical team in Burkina Faso has donated medical supplies valued at 32 million CFA francs (about $56,000) to the Tengandogo University Hospital Center, including equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and other medical devices designed to support general patient care.
The donation comes as Burkina Faso continues efforts to improve healthcare delivery and expand access to quality medical services. Hospital officials said the equipment would help enhance diagnostic and treatment capacity, particularly in the management of cardiovascular conditions, while supporting broader patient care needs.
Chinese Ambassador to Burkina Faso Zhao Deyong said the contribution reflected the longstanding friendship between the two countries and demonstrated China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in the health sector. He noted that 2026 has been designated the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, highlighting the importance of closer cooperation between China and African countries in areas that directly affect people’s lives.
For Burkina Faso’s health authorities, the partnership represents more than the delivery of medical equipment. It has also involved knowledge-sharing, professional training and institutional cooperation. Minister of Health and Public Hygiene Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou expressed appreciation for China’s continued support in areas including hospital development, medical training, academic exchanges, and the provision of medicines and healthcare supplies.
The latest donation is part of a medical partnership that began in 1976, when the first Chinese medical team arrived in Burkina Faso. Over the past five decades, 17 Chinese medical teams have served in the country, providing clinical services, training local healthcare professionals and contributing to the strengthening of Burkina Faso’s health system.
As healthcare demands continue to grow, officials from both countries have emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration. The donation to Tengandogo University Hospital Center represents a practical step toward improving medical services for patients while reinforcing a long-running partnership built around healthcare cooperation and shared development goals
