China Dispatches Medical Expert Team to Support DRC in Fight Against Ebola

By Cremilda Macuácua, China Africa News
Beijing/Kinshasa June 3, 2026 — In a demonstration of international solidarity and public health cooperation, the Chinese government has dispatched a high-level medical expert team to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to assist in combating the ongoing outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease.

The expert group departed Beijing in the early hours of Tuesday and arrived in Kinshasa later the same day, where they will work alongside Congolese health authorities, local medical institutions, and Chinese medical personnel already stationed in the country. Their mission comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to classify the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

According to China’s National Health Commission, the team consists of specialists with extensive experience in epidemic prevention, disease surveillance, clinical treatment, and emergency public health response. Beyond supporting frontline containment efforts, the experts will provide training for healthcare workers, strengthen local prevention and treatment capacities, and share practical lessons learned from previous epidemic responses.

The deployment is accompanied by emergency humanitarian assistance from the Chinese government, underscoring Beijing’s commitment to helping the DRC and other African countries address the evolving health crisis.

The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, was officially declared in May 2026 after cases were confirmed in eastern DRC and neighboring Uganda. Unlike the more common Zaire strain, Bundibugyo Ebola has no licensed vaccine or specific treatment currently available, making containment efforts particularly challenging. The outbreak has affected several provinces in eastern DRC, including Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, with health authorities and international organizations working urgently to curb transmission.

China’s assistance reflects a long-standing tradition of medical cooperation with Africa. During previous Ebola outbreaks in West and Central Africa, including those in 2014, 2015, and 2018, China dispatched medical teams, laboratory experts, and emergency supplies to affected countries. Chinese health workers played a significant role in treatment, disease surveillance, laboratory testing, and capacity building during those crises.

Over the past seven decades, China and African nations have cultivated a partnership grounded in mutual support and shared development. Health cooperation has become a key pillar of that relationship, with Chinese medical teams serving across the continent and contributing to the strengthening of healthcare systems.

As the DRC continues to confront one of its most serious Ebola outbreaks in recent years, international cooperation remains essential. The World Health Organization has emphasized that effective containment will require robust surveillance, rapid case identification, community engagement, contact tracing, and sustained support from global partners.

The arrival of the Chinese expert team represents another chapter in the ongoing collaboration between China and Africa in addressing common challenges. For many observers, it serves as a reminder that infectious disease outbreaks know no borders and that collective action remains one of the most effective tools in protecting public health.

With support from international partners and the resilience of local communities, hopes remain high that the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will achieve an early victory over the Bundibugyo Ebola virus and restore stability to affected regions.
