Nairobi, April 28,2026 — Cooperation between China and Kenya is accelerating the East African nation’s transition toward a green economy, with major investments in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure supporting long-term development goals.

Kenya has positioned itself as a leader in geothermal power, drawing a significant share of its electricity from clean energy sources in the Rift Valley, while expanding projects that link energy production to industrial growth and agricultural sustainability.

According to Xinhua News Agency, more than 40 percent of Kenya’s electricity is generated from geothermal energy, making it one of the leading countries globally in this sector. The report highlights that geothermal power provides stable, around-the-clock electricity and helps lower energy costs compared to fossil fuel alternatives.

Kenya’s geothermal capacity

As reported by Xinhua News Agency, Chinese enterprises have played a key role in advancing Kenya’s geothermal capacity, including the development of projects in the Menengai area. These initiatives include power plants financed, constructed, and operated by Chinese companies, reflecting deepening bilateral cooperation in clean energy.

Xinhua News Agency says the partnership is also expanding into new areas such as the production of green hydrogen and environmentally friendly fertilizers using geothermal energy. These projects are expected to significantly boost local fertilizer production and reduce dependence on imports, supporting Kenya’s agricultural sector.

Cooperation between the two countries extends to other forms of renewable energy and infrastructure, including solar power installations, hydropower projects, and waste-to-energy systems, contributing to a broader green development strategy.

Xinhua News Agency notes that Kenya’s government views clean energy as central to its economic transformation agenda, aiming to build a resilient, low-carbon economy while promoting industrialization and sustainable growth.
