HARARE, Zimbabwe, July 8,2026 — Zimbabwe has marked a new milestone in its agricultural export sector with the first shipment of fresh blueberries destined for the Chinese market, reflecting strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
The breakthrough follows the completion of phytosanitary agreements between Zimbabwean and Chinese authorities, paving the way for local growers to access one of the world’s largest consumer markets. The development is expected to create new opportunities for farmers while boosting foreign exchange earnings for the southern African nation.
Industry stakeholders say demand for premium-quality blueberries continues to grow in China, presenting Zimbabwean producers with a significant opportunity to expand production and attract further investment into the horticulture sector.
The exports also benefit from China’s expanded zero-tariff policy for imports from many African countries, a move designed to deepen trade relations and encourage greater market access for African agricultural products.
Government officials and exporters have welcomed the development, describing it as an important step toward diversifying Zimbabwe’s export portfolio beyond traditional commodities. Analysts believe sustained access to the Chinese market could enhance the country’s competitiveness in global horticultural trade while supporting rural employment and economic growth.
