Yaoundé, May 10, 2026 — Cameroon says it expects stronger trade and economic cooperation with China as the two countries continue to deepen bilateral relations, according to Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development Alamine Ousmane Mey.
Speaking ahead of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, the minister described China as Cameroon’s leading bilateral economic partner and highlighted the growing impact of Chinese-backed infrastructure projects across the country.
Major projects supported by China include the Kribi deep-water port, transportation infrastructure, energy developments, sports facilities, and drinking water systems. Cameroonian authorities say these initiatives have contributed significantly to national development and regional connectivity.
The government is now aiming to broaden cooperation into new areas, including industrialization, public-private partnerships, and greater participation by small and medium-sized enterprises.
Officials also welcomed China’s recently introduced zero-tariff policy covering exports from 53 African countries with diplomatic relations with Beijing. Cameroon believes the measure could create stronger export opportunities for products such as cocoa, coffee, and cotton while improving access to the Chinese market.
Cameroon further intends to deepen engagement through major trade platforms and exhibitions hosted in China, including international trade expos and business forums designed to encourage investment and commercial partnerships.
The country views its relationship with China as a long-term strategic partnership capable of supporting economic growth, infrastructure modernization, and job creation.
