Lusaka, April 20, 2026 —Teachers and students from the Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia have performed traditional Chinese dance during a cultural event in Lusaka. The event marked the celebration of United Nations Chinese Language Day on campus and drew participation from students, faculty, and invited guests.
The performance has formed part of a broader program aimed at promoting Chinese language and culture, highlighting growing educational and cultural exchanges between Zambia and China. Attendees have observed dance routines reflecting classical and contemporary Chinese traditions, accompanied by presentations emphasizing the global significance of the Chinese language.
Observed annually, United Nations Chinese Language Day seeks to foster multilingualism and cultural appreciation within the UN system and beyond. The date is traditionally associated with Cangjie, a legendary figure credited in Chinese history with the creation of written characters. Universities worldwide often mark the occasion through exhibitions, performances, and academic forums.
At the University of Zambia, the event has underscored the role of Confucius Institutes in facilitating cross-cultural dialogue. Organizers note that such activities not only enhance language learning but also strengthen mutual understanding between communities, positioning cultural exchange as a key element of international cooperation
