Culture as a Bridge: Strengthening China–Africa Ties Through Film

Johannesburg, 30,May 2026 —The “Reel China” overseas screening and promotion event was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on May 26 as part of the 2026 China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. The event brought Chinese cinema to South African audiences and showcased the growing role of cultural engagement in strengthening ties between China and Africa.

At the launch ceremony, two of China’s 2026 box office hits, Pegasus 3, a racing drama, and Blade Runner: Wind from the Desert, a martial arts epic, were screened. Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng emphasized the importance of cultural exchanges, noting that film and television serve as an important bridge for bringing people closer together and enhancing mutual understanding.

While economic cooperation and trade often dominate discussions about China–Africa relations, cultural exchanges provide a more personal and lasting connection. Through film, music, literature, and art, people gain insights into each other’s values, traditions, and everyday experiences. These interactions help move relationships beyond official agreements and into the realm of genuine human connection.

Cinema, in particular, has a unique ability to tell stories that resonate across cultures. A compelling film can evoke shared emotions, spark conversations, and reveal common aspirations regardless of nationality. By introducing Chinese stories to African audiences and encouraging greater cultural dialogue, initiatives such as “Reel China” create opportunities for people to learn from one another and appreciate their differences as well as their similarities.

The significance of such exchanges is especially important at a time when global challenges require stronger international understanding and cooperation. Cultural diplomacy helps build trust, break down stereotypes, and create a foundation for deeper collaboration in areas ranging from education and tourism to business and innovation.

The success of the Johannesburg event demonstrates that culture remains one of the most effective bridges between China and Africa. As more cultural programs, film festivals, and artistic collaborations emerge, they have the potential to strengthen people-to-people ties and contribute to a relationship rooted not only in shared interests, but also in mutual respect and understanding.
