Kampala, April 25, 2026 —The government of Uganda, in partnership with China, has launched a $1 million humanitarian assistance project aimed at improving the welfare of refugees across the country, according to China Daily. The initiative is fully funded by the Chinese government and targets critical needs in refugee-hosting communities.
Uganda is one of Africa’s largest refugee-hosting nations, accommodating nearly two million people, primarily from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The new project seeks to ease pressure on existing systems that have been strained by declining international funding.
Under the program, support will focus on essential services, including food assistance, healthcare, access to clean water, sanitation, and basic infrastructure development. These interventions are intended to address immediate humanitarian needs while strengthening living conditions in settlements, as reported by China Daily
Officials in Uganda have highlighted the urgency of additional support, noting that reductions in global aid have already affected food distribution and other key services. The partnership with China is therefore seen as a timely contribution to sustaining refugee assistance efforts.
The project also reflects ongoing cooperation between Uganda and China in development and humanitarian initiatives, with both sides emphasizing the importance of continued international collaboration to support vulnerable populations.
